Touring Colorado/Wyoming/Utah this summer

topic posted Thu, May 17, 2007 - 10:25 PM by  brooke
hi! i just bought a train ticket to Colorado for August. My idea is to ride around there and then go to Wyoming, then down to Utah and take a train back home in early September.

I'm looking for people to train with in the bay area in June and July. Also looking for any comments or advice on this trip. I plan on camping and keeping costs low, getting good panniers, and lightweight tent and that's about it. Any guides you recommend? Tips on keeping it cheap?

Hey, I used to be in the bay area, but now live in boulder. Watch out for the stupid train regulations about where you can take baggage off - I almost used the train for my first tour which was supposed to start in Granby, but found out they didn't let bags on/off the train until Denver. So I took the bus (it sucked, never again!). (this was a couple years ago, rules may have changed.)

Your plan sounds great. PM me at valygrl at bikeforums.net if you want to pick my brain / get a place to stay for a night in boulder. Be aware that in August it may thunderstorm almost every day between around 3-5pm, but it's no biggie, just be off the high passes by then.

Check out adventurcycling.com great parks route for some route info. also, www.dot.state.co.us/bikeped/...20Map.pdf for bike map of CO. Also, REI has a book "cycling colorado's mountain passes" or something like that, which is userful if you are going to ride the high passes, but not so great for linking things up. It's pretty easy, though - just get out and ride. Southern Wyoming is pretty empty.

cool, i'm planning a trip from MN to WY in june to attend the rainbow gathering, and afterwards keep heading west to the coast.

its too bad your dates are in august/september, as gatherings are awesome road havens, great for recharging and eating good food.

good luck though, and have fun!
