Two part question:
I've been having knee pain, just above the patella on only my left leg. I know my left leg is also a little shorter than my right. What does this indicate as far a saddle position (too high/low, too forward/back)? What have you done to remedy a leg discrepancy that doesnt cost $$$? I've had this pain going fairly short distances on flat terrain (under 30miles) unloaded.

Re: Knee Pain, Leg Length Discrepancy, and Saddle Position
Thu, March 29, 2007 - 12:14 PMif you are using clipless pedals, it might mean your cleats are too far forward on your shoes. It did for me.
sorry, this costs money .... $100
I went to the sports medicine group at UC Davis and had them fit my bike - I injured my legs through improper bike & cleat set up - and the Davis visit made a world of difference - I went from 2 miles / day w/ pain to up to 10 per day without pain. They actually had an orthopedic dr. come in and examine my weak leg.
I got a lot of good information from local bike shop, internet, etc. but it didn't do it. After Davis I changed my crank lengths and they gave me a bunch of exercises to strengthen my weak leg and balance out my pedalling
I am told they are either the best facility in the US or one of the best.

did you also have a leg discrepancy or was it just the cleat set-up? -

Thu, March 29, 2007 - 3:35 PMThere are several approaches: www.sheldonbrown.com/cranks.html
pain theories: www.sheldonbrown.com/pain.html
but I'd ask these folks, they're pretty good: www.hscycle.com/index.html

Re: Knee Pain, Leg Length Discrepancy, and Saddle Position
Thu, March 29, 2007 - 6:34 PMI'm wondering if some kind of custom insert to build up the pedal might help?
Definately sounds like a professional consultation like Alchemist got would be beneficial...

Re: Knee Pain, Leg Length Discrepancy, and Saddle Position
Fri, March 30, 2007 - 7:35 AMYou can measure your own leg lengths to figure out if there is a discrepancy and be at least if not more accurate than some of the kooks out there. The silliest one I heard was a personal trainer having the client sit with legs outstretched and saying, "Yep - different." then later on switching the orthotic lift to the other foot. Huh?

Re: Knee Pain, Leg Length Discrepancy, and Saddle Position
Wed, April 4, 2007 - 6:44 AMA "rider fit machine" in a bike shop is hardly a "kook out there" those machines accuratly measure differences in leg lenth. -

Re: Knee Pain, Leg Length Discrepancy, and Saddle Position
Wed, April 4, 2007 - 1:34 PMIf you read my post you would see that the person who determined a leg length discrepancy decided it was one leg, then later changed their mind opting for the other leg as being too long...
hence *kook*.
(no machine involved)
