I just returned from one of my favorite late afternoon jaunts from my place in Fort Bragg to Westport along Hwy 1. The sensation is second to none; the Cypress, Redwood, Eucalyptus, the lush green grasses, the wildflowers, the infinite expanse of sparkling ocean with the constantly changing light majestically streaming through the clouds, the bluffs, the spray of the surf, the air. Westport (population 400) has a general store with a few places to sit on the wooden deck - a perfect place to have a snack. If I'm in a bad mood, this ride always fixes it.
Anybody else have a favorite ride that they'd like to share?

Sat, April 7, 2007 - 9:50 PMAnywhere off Skyline in the NW hills of Portland rocks. Skyline is only a few miles from downtown Portland and it feels like you are out in the country. I have several blogs with pics of my rides up there on my tribe site.
Your route sounds outstanding.

Re: What's your favorite day ride?
Sun, April 8, 2007 - 5:17 AMhi,is there much traffic on that stretch? just getting back into cycling after skiing for the winter. i live in reno so it is still a bit of winter weather here. the older i get the less i like cars, been riding since i was 17. i get out on trails with my mtn. bike occasionally but i like my road bike still. most mtn. bike trails are too rocky or technical, it is hard to find a lot of variety for a not so technical rider.
cheers,

Re: What's your favorite day ride?
Sun, April 8, 2007 - 11:48 PMHwy 1 is not too bad except for the first two miles or so north of Fort Bragg. I almost got terminated by an RV in that area. I feel the same way you do about cars. However, without a car in this region it's really hard to get around (there's one bus per day in and out of Fort Bragg). For example, to get to the 101 corridor (Leggett, Laytonville, Willits) by bike you have to go about 45mi over the coastal range (3000-4000ft depending on which road you take) or you can go south to 128 and then cut east to the 101 about half-way between Ukiah and Hopland (about 70mi). The village of Mendocino is an easy 8mi south of Fort Bragg, but you have to be real careful on the narrow bridges, and night rides are a hail Mary. So, eventually, I'll have to get a car. My bike isn't set up for trails, but I like riding easy trails when I can. There are some logging roads that go deep into the hills. Mostly, I just love to float through this region. Do you ever go Sierraville hot springs? There's a really nice place called Orr hot springs here in Mendocino county. I've been to both places. I'm going to try to bike up to Orr over the summer.

Thu, April 12, 2007 - 9:16 AMThe Chehalis Western Yelm to Tenino Rails-to-Trails Bicycle Trail that begins in Olympia WA and ends in Tenino or Yelm WA.
The Chehalis Western Trail is 15 miles, and it intersects with The Yelm To Tenino Trail. Another 15 miles to Yelm,or 13 miles to Tenino depending if you go left or right.
It's a 100% Motorized VEHICLE-FREE Paved Wooded Bicycling Paradise!
VERY few Rollerbladers use it,and almost NO Mom's walking baby Strollers it's 98% Bicyclist's!

Thu, April 12, 2007 - 11:18 AMI'm with you, Candace. As a Sacramento resident, I take advantage of this stretch nearly every weekend. You go from flatland to foothills during this ride and it is great fun to watch the terrain and plant life change as you climb. -

Fri, April 13, 2007 - 12:51 PMTiburon Loop.
When I lived in Kentucky, I had a ride I called "Tour of the Hills" crossed the KY river the maximum # of times, at 18% grade....55 miles of pure hill climbing hell.....lovely. -

Wed, April 18, 2007 - 12:13 AMI've done the Tiburon Loop quite a few times. It's great for a scenic ride near the city (SF). I like the back roads through west Marin; Point Reyes, Tomales Bay, and the town of Tomales. -

Re: What's your favorite day ride?
Mon, April 30, 2007 - 10:32 AMI live north of sacramento (though considering a move to Fort Bragg sometimes soon, vacation there several times a year). From my house I can take quiet roads all the way to the Sutter Buttes, ride around them following the 40 mile "Bike Around the Buttes" route, then ride home in just over 75 miles. There's a watermelon farmer on the route that nearly forces free watermelon and cantaloupe on cyclists as they pass. Though it's a little disheartening to see the occasional house popping up in the Buttes. Not much traffic though and the locals are usually pretty courtious.

Re: What's your favorite day ride?
Wed, May 2, 2007 - 8:28 AMchuckanut">www.chuckanutdrive.com/">chuckanut drive, south of bellingham in washington state. it's very hilly, very winding, very narrow, prone to landslides, often wet, and stunningly beautiful. best to avoid on a sunny weekend day, due to packs of speeding motorcyclists, but lovely early in the morning or on a weekday. round trip is probably 25 miles, but the ride can be easily extended in the skagit valley flats, in a number of directions.
anybody wanna ride it with me? -:D (smiley with a mohawk™) -

Re: What's your favorite day ride?
Sun, May 20, 2007 - 7:47 PMI lived in Bellingham WA for about 5 months; 1/06-5/06. I used to bike Chuckanut to Edison and back. That's a wonderful ride. Edison has several cool art galleries as well as a bakery, pub, and eateries. The population is only 133, but it's a cool place. I once road there on a day that seemed like it was only going to drizzle a little bit. By the time I got there it was raining steadily and I was soaked. So, I squeezed out most of the water and went into the bar (I forgot the name) and had a beer. The whole thing felt great, even on the ride home.
