Hi, I just moved to the bay area from seattle and I'd like to do some exploring by bike. Is highway 1 along the coast very bike friendly? Are there other nice rides along the coast?
Thanks
Alan

Re: hwy 1 in N. Ca. Bike friendly?
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 5:10 PMYup,
take BART to Daly City, ride over toward Pacifica and down you go. The next 400 miles are great
until you get to Ventura.

Re: hwy 1 in N. Ca. Bike friendly?
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 2:54 PMI was riding out there September last. Hwy 1 from Coleman Valley Road (between Bodega Bay and the Russian River) south can be busy at times. I believe, but do not know, that the riding might be better heading north from there. Route 1 can be narrow in places, and full of tourists during the season, especially weekends. South of Bodega Bay, there are side roads that might be more fun. As you may have found out already, Cali roads can be quite inconsistent: narrow shoulder, wide shoulder, (suddenly) no shoulder, wide road, narrow road - and CA1 is no exception.
Suggest you find a copy of the "North San Francisco Bay & Wine Country Bicycle Touring Map" if you haven't already. There's a lot of good riding to be had, especially as you get north-ish towards Healdsburg and beyond. If you get the urge to go inland, CA29 can be jam-packed as far north as Calistoga. Avoid CA29 between Calistoga and Middleton (Harbin) at almost all costs. -

Re: hwy 1 in N. Ca. Bike friendly?
Mon, July 6, 2009 - 9:23 PMI disagree with Bill about hwy 1 south of the Bay Area. Especially south of Monterey.
The Big Sur coast, in the height of summer is not overrun with tourist and RVs.
As a matter of fact most RV avoid it like the plague. Saturday late morning
will have a bunch of cars. However, mid-summer, on a Tuesday afternoon,
after the fog has burned off, you will have five - ten minute stretches where
no cars go by at all.
It is *a lot* farther then the alternative (hwy 101), there is no *out* if you decide to only go
part of the way. Therefore, most folks don't drive it if at all possible, expecially
if the RV/tourist/camper actually is trying to go somewhere.. Try it. -

That was south from Coleman Valley Road, which is north of Bodega Bay :) :) :)
But, since you mention it, South of SF seemed cool, but I've not ridden it. Then again, somewhere between Pescadero and Santa Cruz there's this major downslope with a RR crossing at the bottom. I remember almost bottoming the rental car, even after slowing *way* down.
Peace

Re: hwy 1 in N. Ca. Bike friendly?
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 8:23 PMThere's a great bike map company here.... www.krebscycleproducts.com/ They're often available at local bike shops, too. I know REI carries them.
The maps have all the info you need, including grade and alternate route info. If you're going south from the Bay Area, be wary of 'devils' slide'- a tricky narrow windy part of the 1 that is pretty dangerous on bicycle. Really, the 1 is a beautiful ride anyway though- just be prepared for some big hills, and lots of little ones! -

Mon, July 6, 2009 - 1:16 PMthanks all of you for the info! I'm gonna load up on maps and look around for North San Francisco Bay & Wine Country Bicycle Touring Map. That sounds great! I went out to Point Reyes this weekend through Nicasio Valley and it was amazing! Thanks for the info on Hwy 1. I'll get some of those maps and do some more exploring. -
