i've done lots....but my longest trip was only 1000 kilometres (metric...canadian)

      i recommend :

      1.a small water filter

2.a 'thermarest' if u are camping on the ground (in tent without hammock ) especially if u will be in high elevations, as nights can be very cold in high mountains!

      3. extra dried food for 'emergency' ...and visit farms when u can!!! also 'wild medicinal edible plant' research is good.

      4. A BIG FEARLESS SMILE!!!!! (it will take u everywhere u want 2 go!)

      5. Good quality panniers that *clip* onto your rack, and don't fall of when u ride thru bumps!!!!! (trust me)

      6. A good map...preferably one designed for the trip you are doing....or even a book of maps....ideally one written by experienced cyclists.

      :::::one last tip :::::

I've been solo cycle touring since my early 20's and one thing that makes me feel very good is the fact that i'm trained in martial arts. I LOVE to tell people about it someTimes!!! It's made large boys run away at times! I LOVE IT : ) (makes me laugh) Stay clear and listen 2 your inner intuitive guideance, and nothing shall ever harm you. YOU ARE LIGHT. (and cycle tour experiences can be deeply reasuring!)

just a quick questions first, have you ever done a long distance trip before, and how comfortable are you on a bike?

I have never done a long distance trip like this before, but this summer - in preparation - I am going to take a bike ride to the Oregon coast and possibly to San Fransisco...I bike all over Portland and would say I am comfortable on a bike. I ride anywhere from 3 - 25 miles a day depending.

I've done some touring in Mexico as well as a lot in the USA and a little in other places. I'll probably be heading south through Mexico and Central America and then South America starting this fall.

If you're interested in reading about my Mexican experiences (January, 2007) look at the earliest blog entry on my profile (Scot Domergue).

I love traveling by bicycle and have loved my two tours in Mexico (previous one about 10 years ago from Bend, OR to Zijuatanejo, Mexico).

I'm sure your approach will be different from mine, but I'd be happy to communicate with you, answer questions you might have as I'm able, share thoughts - e-mail: scotdomergue@yahoo.com

    In any case, Best Wishes!

This is fricken fantastic. I am going back to school (to graduate this time grrrwwrrr....) and my carrot at the end is to treat myself to the same thing, biking to S. America.

What kind of bike do you have? In talking with people, they recommended a cycle cross bike would be the best, but I'm really just asking the Greater We.

And to all that are reading, what do you think is a good amount of training to have before a trip like this? Is love and determination in the end enough? Right now I do anywhere from 8-15 a day, less than you Lind-sAY, .....I'd like a goal to work for. hmmm.....

Are you going by yourself, lady? You rock! Love and light guide your way!

A former colleague of mine (who was also laid off) decided to do just that, only with a motorcycle. Not as much fun as really riding, I know, but his blog about the trip is quite interesting and might give you some insight on places to stay.
